Lin read the first 54 pages from a 270-page book in the last 3 days. Diego read the first 100 pages from a 320-page book in the last 4 days. Elena read the first 160 pages from a 480-page book in the last 5 days. If they continue to read every day at these rates, who will finish first, second, and third? Explain or show your reasoning.

How many pages did each person read in ONE day?

Lin: 54 pages / 3 days = 18 pages per day

Diego: 100 pages / 4 days = 25 pages per day

Elena: 160 pages / 5 days = 32 pages per day

Now if they continue at their rate....

How long will it take Lin to finish 270 pages ?

270 pages needed to read / 18 pages per day = 15 days needed to finish the book

How long will it take Diego to finish 320 pages ?

320 pages needed to read / 25 pages per day = 12.8 days needed to finish the book ....except we need to round that to 13 days needed to read the ENTIRE book (:

How long will it take Elena to finish 480 pages ?

480 pages needed to read / 32 pages per day = 15 days needed to finish the book

Lets say: Lin started on Monday, Diego started reading a day later so he started on Tuesday, and Elena started a day after that so she started reading on Wednesday.

Lin:

Start on Monday.... count 15 days to finish... she ended two weeks later on Monday

Example: Monday April 27.... 15 days later.... Monday May 11th

Start on Tuesday.... count 13 days to finish... he ended Sunday

Example: Tuesday April 28.... count 13 days to finish.... Sunday May 10th
