I don’t know what the historical resources are that you’ve been using, but the colonization of the Americas was primarily a commercial movement. The Mayflower colonists who landed in Massachusetts, for instance, were financed under a contract with a monopoly called The Merchant Adventurers. The colonists were required to purchase all their finished goods, including cloth to make their clothes, from England, and to send all of their raw materials, particularly wool from the sheep they brought with them, to England to be made into finished goods for them to buy.
