A fruit stand has to decide what to charge for their produce. They decide to charge $5.30 for 1 apple and 1 orange. They also plan to charge $14 for 2 apples and 2 oranges. We put this information into a system of linear equations.

Can we find a unique price for an apple and an orange?

Answer 1

a+o = $5.3 ----------- (1)

2a + 2o = $14 -------(2)

divide equ (2) by 2

(2a + 2o) / 2 = $14 / 2

a + o = $7 which contradicts equ (1)

therefore no solution exist ---

Answer 2

a + o = 5.3

2a + 2o = 14

Well, we can divide the 2nd equation by 2.

a + o = 7

Well, if a + o = 7, it can't also equal 7, so no.
