Global interactions changed dramatically following the colonization of the Americas by Europeans. Europeans learned that there was a whole "New World" full of resources and natives who needed to be converted to Christianity. Different nations competed with each other for pieces of land. Europeans traded with the natives, but also sometimes enslaved and killed them. Around 90% of Native Americans were killed by European diseases within a few decades of the conquest.
The colonization of the Americas impacts our lives today because without it, the nations that form the Americas would not exist. The continents would be populated entirely by Native Americans. In addition, Africans would not have been brought to the Americas as slaves, and Europe would not have become as wealthy as it did.
