An open box is to be constructed from a square piece of sheet metal by removing a square of side 3 feet from each corner and turning up the edges. IF the box is to hold 243 cubic feet, what should be the dimensions of the sheet metal?

Let the side of square is x ft.

When a square of 3 feet is cut from all four corners and turning up the edges.

Base sides = (x-6). Feet each

Volume of the open box =(x-6)(x-6)*3=243

(x-6)(x-6)=81

x-6=9

x=15

 

So, the dimensions of the sheet metal are

Length = 15 feet

Breadth = 15 feet
