A class of 40 children is 60
boys. At least how many boys would have to be replaced by girls to make a majority of the class girls?
Step One.
Change the word problem to a math equation that represents the facts of the equation.....so...
40 children 60 % boy....... 60% * 40 = .60 * 40 = 24 boys in the class 40-24 = 16 girls in the class
Step Two....What is the question asking us to find....
a majority is when one value greater than another value.......currently 16 girls < 24 boys
the problem says REPLACE not add or subtract......so for every girl we add we will subtract a boy...right..
if we add 4 girls...subtract 4 boys....we have 20 girls = 20 boys...but we want a majority.....so we need to add 5.. girls...not just 4
add 5 girls...subtract 5 boys.....we get 21 girls > 19 boys.....so we need to REPLACE 5 boys with 5 girls..
