Let "the number" be x. It would make sense, then, to say "three times a number" to be 3x.
Difference means to subtract, so 3x - 6 would be on the left side of the equation.
Is means "=", and "more" means "+", so "9 more than the number" means 9 + x on the right side.
Combining all this makes: 3x - 6 = 9 + x ⇒ 3x -x = 9 + 6 ⇒ 2x = 15 ⇒ x = 7.5
Therefore, "the number" is x = 7.5, and "three times the number" is 3x = 22.5. Hope this helps!
