I assume you meant the ratio to be (n2 - 2n - 24)/(n2 + 2n - 8). (Use parentheses in this forum.) Factor both polynomials and see if there is a value of where you divide by zero.
(n2 - 2n - 24)/(n2 + 2n - 8) = (n - 6)(n + 4) / [(n - 2)(n + 4)]
Note the denominator is zero when x equals 2 or -4. These are excluded values. Note also that (n+4) would cancel out, but that operation assume n ≠ -4.
