Sarah took the advertising department from her company on a round trip to meet with a potential client. Including Sarah a total of 10 people took the trip. She was able to purchase coach tickets for ​$320 and first class tickets for ​$1210. She used her total budget for airfare for the​ trip, which was ​$7650. How many first class tickets did she​ buy? How many coach tickets did she​ buy?

x = number of 1st class tickets

y = number of coach tickets

We nave two unknowns so the approach to come up with two simultaneous equations in two unknowns to solve for both unknowns.

x + y = 10 total tickets

y = 10-x

x coach tickets at $320 each + y first class tickets at $1210 each = $7650

which simplifies to following equation:

320x + 1210y = 7650

substituting 10-x for y in above equation:

320x + 1210(10-x) = 7650

320x + 12100 - 1210x = 7650

-890x = -4450

x = 5

y = 10- x = 5

Bought 5 first class and 5 coach tickets

since bought 10 total tickets, y=5 (coach tickets)
