It depends on what side you are on. While the original owner of the Suez Canal was private, a country has the right to nationalize areas deemed necessary to the country's daily systems. The Suez Canal is very much a major part of their trade and economic system. Furthermore, the corporation stock holders were compensated. On the other hand, nationalizing a private corporation may look as though the Government is usurping the power of its citizens. Considering both sides, the benefits far outweighed the costs in this situation so Egypt was proper in its actions.
