Hi Nanya,
Let's use the variable c represent the NUMBER of clothes sold.
Then since there were 64 more shoes sold than clothes, we can write the following expression to represent the NUMBER of shoes: c + 64
Since the total for both was 714, we can write and solve the following equation to determine the number of clothes sold:
Clothes + shoes = 714
c + c + 64 = 714
Now combine like terms and use inverse operations to determine the number of clothes:
c + c + 64 = 714
2c + 64 = 714
2c + 64 - 64 = 714 - 64
2c = 650
2c/2 = 650/2
c = 325
There were 325 clothes sold on Monday.
The number of shoes would be 714 - 325 = 389 shoes (pairs of shoes I assume)
Hope this helps Nanya. Let me know if you have more questions or would like to schedule a lesson (online if you prefer).
Take care.
