We can write the following expression to represent the cost of the garden table: b + 80
Then since the total for both is $1030, we can write and solve the following equation to determine the cost of the bench:
bench + garden table = $1030
b + b + 80 = 1030
Now combine like terms and use inverse operations to solve:
b + b + 80 = 1030
2b + 80 = 1030
2b - 80 = 1030 - 80
2b = 950
b/2 = 950/ 2
b = 475
