So during the Industrial Revolution a new process called "macadam" was used to create smooth gravel roads.

So what impact did they have It was a huge impact that sure did make it easier to get around. But the biggest impact was probably on the impact on the environment. Major increases in population means great decreases in natural resources. And as always the use of chemicals and fuel in factories resulted in increased air and water pollution and an increased use of fossil fuels.
