A rectangle has a larger length than width. The area of the rectangle is 8,525 square feet. The perimeter of the rectangle is two hundred feet more than four times its width. What are its dimensions?

P = 2(L + W)

Given:

P = 200 + 4W

You have two expressions for P. Set them equal to each other:

2(L + W) = 200 + 4W

L = A/W = 8525/W ⇒

2(8525/W + W) = 200 + 4W

Multiply both sides by W and get

2(8525) + 2W² = 200W + 4W²

SImplify and get

2W² + 200W - 17050 = 0

W² + 100W - 8525 = 0

(W - 55)(W + 155) = 0

W = 55 ft

L = A/W = 8525/55 ft = 155 ft
