Word problems can be tricky when we are doing math! First, let's go over what a variable is. A variable is an unknown number in your problem. Most people call the variable "x" (but you can call the variable any letter or symbol that makes sense to you). In the equation, the unknown number will now be written as "x".
So, in your problem "14 times what number equals 70" we will replace the "what number" with "x"
14 * x = 70
x = 70 / 14 (I divided both sides by 14 to cancel out the multiplication)
x = 5 (I completed the math in the line above to find x)
