The pythagorean theorem is a2 + b2 = c2, which I am sure you know.
The question is who goes where when I form the triangle? The key sentence for that is "Harold is directly behind Shawn and directly left of Brooke." What does that mean? It means that Harold is the right angle.
So the side opposite Harold is the hypotenuse, the distance from Brooke to Shawn. So the two sides are from Harold to Brooke and from Shawn to Harold.
So this is how we would set it up:
side (Shawn to Harold) a = 1 m
side (Harold to Brooke) b = ?
hypotenuse (Brooke to Shawn) c = 2 m
Now, you can apply the pythagorean theorem and get your answer using the formula above and substituting your values in and find b, which will be your distance between Harold and Brooke.
