Similarity of solving life problem and math problem:

1. you analyze the situation (given in question)
2. you calculate and estimate the value (simulating the formula from experiments and sample statistics)
3. And you finalize the results/decision from what told you from the data

Differences:

1. there is no specific value (discrete) for the answer, but a continuous range of relevant data
2. real life problem dependent on human decision (so human error, sociology and psychology involved), math problem is basically theoretical
3. real life problem has lots more factors involved (sometimes the factors are hidden), math problem usually has the conditions and data given
