Parentheses first:
Within parentheses, exponents first
42 = 16
16 - 9 = 7
3(7) + 1 - 22
Exponents next
22 = 4
3(7) + 1 - 4
Multiplication next
3*7 = 21
21 + 1 - 4 = 18
