You are given that the sum of two numbers is 5. So you start with N + ? = 5. That is what you are given in this problem. Now you have to figure out how to represent the other number.
You don't know what the the two numbers added together are. All you know is that those two numbers add up to be 5.
If one of the numbers is represented by n, you can choose any letter to represent the other number. I will chose X. So, now we know that X + N = 5.
You can also use subtraction in the equation as well.
Here you could say 5 − N = X or you can rewrite it as X = 5 - N
