The square root of 81 makes 9

The square root of 100 makes 10

The square root of 85 is closer to the square root of 81 than the square root of 100

So the square root of 85 must be much closer to 9 than 10

And if you put the square root of 85 in your calculator you would see that

it is true. It is approximately 9.2 which is closer to 9 than to 10.
