step 1: begin by combining like terms. I prefer to start with the variables. so, subtract the y (or 1y) from both sides to get 8 alone on the right.
4y+5=8+y
-y -y
3y+5=8
Step 2: Get the variable (and any numbers attached to it) alone. So subtract five from both sides.
3y+5=8
-5 -5
3y=3
Step 3: Get the variable by itself, by removing all attached numbers. Divide both sides by 3.
3y=3
/3 /3
y=1
Extra Step: Always, if able, check your work by plugging it back into the original equation.
