Let's represent one of the numbers with the variable x and the other number with the variable y.
Then x + y = 17
and x - y = 4
We can combine these two equations (using elimination):
x + y = 17
x - y = 4
2x = 21
x = 10.5
x + y = 17
10.5 + y = 17
y= 6.5
One of the numbers is 10.5 and the other is 6.5
