Let N represent nickels (5 cents) and D represent dimes (10 cents).
A and B are the numbers of each
5A + 10B = $1.50 = 150 (cents) (1)
A + B = 20 (coins) (2)
Solve the system of equations for A and B
Multiply (2) by -5 and add to (1)
5A + 10B = 150
-5A -5B = -100
0A + 5B = 50
5B = 50
Divide both sides by 5 to find B = 10 dimes
Use the found value of B in (2) (or (1)) to find
A + 10 = 20
Solve for A to find A = 10 nickels
Test: in (1) 5(A) + 10(B) = 150
use found values of A and B to see that
5(10) + 10(10 = 50+100 = 150 = $1.50.
