It is not clear if you meant
-10 + √(2x + 1) = -5
or
-10 + √(2x) + 1 = -5
I will work the first one. Even if it is not the problem you intended, you can still see the method.
-10 + √(2x + 1) = -5
Get the square root by itself on one side.
√(2x + 1) = -5 + 10 = 5
Square both sides.
2x + 1 = 52 = 25
Solve for x.
x = (25 - 1) / 2 = 12
Test the answer.
-10 + √[2(12) + 1] = -5 (good)
