Two trains leave towns 366 miles apart at the same time and travel toward each other. One train travels 17 mih slower than the other. If they meet in 2 hours, what is the rate of each train?

Distance = (Rate)(Time)

 

Let x = speed of train

   x - 7 = speed of slower train

 

The trains meet when the sum of the distances = 483

 

2x + 2(x-17) = 366

2x + 2x - 34 = 366

4x = 400

x = 100

 

The speeds are 100 mph and 83 mph.
