If Ricky has x number of hits, we know Pedro has x+280 hits.

Let the number of hits by Ricky = x

Let the number of hits by Pedro = x+280

We know, all together, they had 2690 hits, so

x+(x+280) = 2690

combining like terms gives

2x+280 = 2690

subtracting 280 from both sides gives

2x = 2410

dividing both sides by 2 gives

x = 1205

Ricky had 1205 hits, Pedro had 1485 hits
