8th grade, need help understanding polynomials

What makes a polynomial not a polynomial? Negative exponents, I get that part, but what else?

If it is not in the form

f(x) = a_nxⁿ + a_n-1x^n-1 + ... + a₁x + a₀,

then it is not a polynomial in x.
