If we define adult tickets as A and student tickets as S, we can come up with 2 related equations:
A+S=8 because the total tickets sold were 8
and
5.50A+3.50S=40 when we translate the price per ticket and total cost into its equation
To solve the system, adjust the first equation to
S=8-A
Then, substitute this for S into the 2nd equation so that you can solve for A
From there, remember your PEMDAS order of operations as you solve for A
