The ratio of boys to girls is 12 to 17. This tells us that the total for this ratio is 29 (OR 12 + 17).
Then we can write the ratio of boys to total as 12 and the same ration for the whole camp could be

Now we have two equivalent ratios that we can use to find the number of boys at the camp:
12 = x
29 203
Since 29 times 7 equals 203 , we can multiply 12 by 7 to determine the number of boys at the camp:
12 * 7 = x
29 * 7 = 203
x = 84 boys
Thee number of girls will be 203 - 84 or 119 girls
