I will make a guess that you need to figure out how many hours Eva worked last week tutoring and clearing tables
Let's Setup a few equations and variables.
E = total money earned last week
x = hours tutoring ( and earns $16/hr => $16x)
y = hours clearing tables ( and earns $8/hr => $8y)
last week Eva worked 3 times as many hours clearing tables as tutoring:
y=3x
(clearing tables 'y' is 3 times bigger than torturing 'x')
We know that Eva earned $80:
E= $80
Another equation for E with x hrs and y hrs
E = $16x +$8y
Now plug in $80 for E and 3x for y
80 = 16x + 8(3x)
80 = 16x + 24x
80 = 40x
x = 2
Now solve for y
y=3x
y=3(2)
y = 6
Answer:
Eva worked 2 hrs tutoring and 6 hrs clearing tables
Double check the total Earned equation with the hours worked and the amount Eva made Equation
E = $16x +$8y ; E = $80
$80 = $16(2) + $8(6)
$80 = $32 + $48
$80 = $80

(16x)+8(3x)=80 X is the number of hours
(16x)+(24x)=80 Multiply 8 times 3
40x=80 Add 16 and 24
x=2 Divide both sides of the equal sign by 40 to solve for X
Eva worked 2 hours tutoring and 6 hours clearing tables. Six is three times the hours worked tutoring and adds up to $80 with the amount paid per hour for each job.
