There are two numbers. When first number is increased by 125%, the obtained number is 300 less than second number and if the first number is increased by 150 then the obtained number is 200 less than the second number. Find out the sum of the two numbers

From the word problem, we know:

1) 2.25x = y - 300

2) x + 150 = y - 200

This gives us an equality, with which we can solve for x:

2.25x + 300 = x + 350

subtract 300 from both sides and subtract x from both sides:

1.25x = 50

x = 40

If x is 40, we can plug 40 in for x into either of equations (1) or (2) above to find y:

40 + 150 = y - 200

190 = y - 200

y = 390

The sum of the two numbers is thus:

40 + 390 = 430
