You and yours friends have a total of $12 to spend on a pizza. A large Pizza with cheese costs $8 plus $0.40 for each additional topping, tax included. Write an inequality and solve it to find the number of topping you can afford.

"A large Pizza with cheese costs $8 ..." So, this is the cost of a pizza with no extra toppings.

Let x represent the number of extra toppings. The cost for toppings is $0.40*x That makes the grand total:

$8 + $0.40x

"a total of $12 to spend" The pizza must cost less than or equal to $12. Or, you could say, "the cost must not exceed $12.

$8 + $0.40x ≤ $12

An expression is usually written with decreasing powers of a variable (like x):

$0.40x + $8 ≤ $12

Well, you can spend $12 or less, so ≤ 12.

If I just buy a cheese pizza, that's $8. If I add mushrooms, that's 8 + 0.40(1), right? Add onions, too, and I'm at 8 + 0.40(2).

Since we don't know how many toppings we want (and can afford), we'll pay 8 + 0.40x for a pizza.

Now, 3 things. Since 0.40 = 0.4 and we don't add unnecessary zeroes, we'll write 8 + 0.4x. Aaaaaand, we write the term with the variable first. Aaaaaaaand, just like y = mx + b, we put the output in the very front.
