To solve this problem we need to get "d" alone.
First, since 54 is a positive number lets subtract it from both sides so that we are left with -9d=-36.
In that equation there is a -9 being multiplied by d; to get d alone you need to divide by -9 on both sides. This will leave you with d=4, which is your answer.
Now, if this was meant to be (54-9)d=18 then you would need to complete the function within the parenthesis first which is 54-9=45. From there you are left with 45d=18. Since the 45 is being multiplied by d we are going to divide both sides by 45 to get the d alone. Which leaves you with d=2/5
