The slope of a line parallel to 2x + 4y = -17 would have the same slope as this line. So you need to determine what is the slope of the given line.
We can rewrite the equation of the line in slope-intercept form and the slope will become evident. (Recall that slope-intercept form is y = mx + b where m represents the slope of the line.)
Slope-intercept form:
2x + 4y = -17
4y = -2x -17
y = -2x/4 - 17/4
y = -1x/2 -17/4
Therefore the slope of the given line is -1/2 and the slope of any parallel line will also be -1/2.
