Let's let the variable y represent Donna's age and the variable x represent Cash's current age.
Then since Donna is 14 years older than Cash, we can write:
y = x + 14
Also Donna is 3 times as old as Cash, so we can write:
y = 3x
Since both these equations are equal to y, we can write:
x + 14 = 3x
We can subtract x from both sides of the equation and divide by 2 to solve:
x + 14 - x = 3x - x
14 = 2x
14/2 = 2x/2
x = 7 years old (Cash's age)
Donna's age would be x + 14 = 7 + 14 = 21 years old (Donna's age)
