To find the area of a rectangle, we multiply the length by the width:
A = l * w
Since the area is 11 1/4 or 45/4 inches and the length is 4 1/2 or 9/2 inches, we can write:
45/4 = 9/2 * w
To solve, divide 45/4 by 9/2. This is accomplished by multiplying 45/4 by the reciprocal of 9/2 or 2/9:
45/4 * 2/9 = w
5/2 inches = w
So the width is 2 1/2 inches.
