If Sam has 4 times as many dimes as quarters and they have a combined value of 520 cents, how many of each coin does he have?

Let D = number of Dimes

Let Q = number of Quarters.

D = 4Q

10D + 25Q = 520

(10)(4Q) + 25Q = 520

40Q + 25Q = 520

65Q = 520

Q = 520 / 65 = 8, ans

D = 4Q = (4)(8) = 32, ans

Check:

10(32) + 25(8) = 320 + 200 = 520
