You see this is an absolute quantity, and hence x²-5x is to be solved for two quantities: +1 and -1

x²-5x=1 & x² -5x=-1

Since this is a quadratic equation, with a degree if utmost two then we got to have at most two roots for each equation. By root I mean a solution satisfying the equation. Since we got 2 equations each with 2 solutions for x, then in total we have 4 roots.
