Spongy bone is typically found at the terminal ends of bones whereas compact bone is found in the diaphysis and covers the exterior of bones. Spongy bone is comprised of trabeculae which looks like the inside of a sponge (go figure). Spongy bone is also densely filled with red marrow prior to adulthood and comprises the epiphyseal plate which is responsible for bone growth. Compact bone is predominantly used for structure of the bone itself and also has a network of osteocytes (bone cells) accompanied with nerves and blood vessels.
