Hi Sarah--

 

Think of it this way. If 1 gallon counts a whole, a half gallon counts as a half. :-)

 

So if you have 35 halves, it looks like this:

 

35/2, which is the same as saying 35 ÷ 2, which is...

 

17 and a 1/2.
