Let's use x to represent the price of the stock yesterday. If today's price is less than yesterday's by $7.18, then we can write the following equation to represent yesterday's price:
(In other words, the stock price went down by $7.18)
x - 7.18 = 68.54
To solve, add 7.18 to both sides of the equation:
x - 7.18 + 7.18 = 68.54 + 7.18
x =$75.72
Yesterday's price would have been $75.72
