For this question, we need to make an equation out of what they are saying in words. We'll say that he number we're looking for is x.
"the sum of a number and 3" is just x + 3
"the difference of twice the number and 1" is 2x - 1
So the full equation will be:
(5)(x+3) = (3)(2x-1)
Distribute the 5 on the left and the 3 on the right to get:
5x + 15 = 6x - 3
Add the 3 to both sides and get:
5x + 18 = 6x. Finally, subtract the 5x on both sides to get:
18 = x
