By definition, the term “cortex” would describe the outer/superficial layer of an organ or anatomical structure. Taking this into consideration, the cerebral cortex would be the external structure of the brain (divided into 2 hemispheres with each composed of 4 lobes (frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital). As the cerebral cortex does not possess a “smooth” surface, the folds (gyri) and fissures (sulci) present along the external surface could possibly be considered external surface structures as well.
