Let's call adults=x and children y. So we have x+y=500 (which is the total number of people). We also know that the total ticket sales are $ 7,355 when we know that tickets for adults cost $17,95 and for children $12,95. We can rewrite this as 17.95x+12.95y=7,355.
So we have 2 equations:
x+y=500
17.95x+12.95y=7,355.
Next, we express one of the variables (x or y) in terms of the other. For example, x=500-y.
Once we do that, we go ahead and plug (500-y) instead of x in the second equation, as follows:
17.95(500-y)+12.95y=7,355
8,975-17.95y+12.95y=7,355
8,975-7,355=5y
y=324
