Since we don’t know what “some number” is we have to use a variable as a placeholder to set up our equation. When you are finding a fractional part of a number you are using multiplication. Of is often the word that is used for multiplication involving fractions, such as 1/2 of 4 is 2. (1/2 multiplied by 4 is exactly two). My equation to set up and solve is:
(1/4)x + 21 = 127
-21 -21
0.25x = 106
You would then divide by 1/4, which is 0.25 as a decimal. 106 divided by 0.25 is exactly 424, since dividing by 1/4 is the same as multiplying by 4.
