Two times the sum of a number and 6 is equal to 4.
Sum implies addition, and times implies multiplication of the entire quantity.
If we let x equal the number then:
2(x+6) = 4
2x + 2(6) = 4 --- Distributive property
2x + 12 = 4
-12 -12
2x = -8
/2 /2
x = -4
