Question

Write the equation of the line perpendicular to 3x + 2y = -8 that passes through (3,1) 

    Write you answer in slope-intercept form. Show ALL your work!

3x+2y=-8 ... rewrite to be y=-2/3x-4 ... from that we see that the slope = -2/3 = m and y-intercept = -4 .

A line perpendicular will have a slope = - 1/m = 3/2 = 1.5 yielding an equation y=1.5x+b that passes through (3,1). Thus 1= 1.5*3+b yielding b = -3.5. The final equation is y=1.5x-3.5.
