The larger of two numbers is 5 less than four times the smaller number. The sum of the two numbers is 50. What are the two numbers.
Let A=the larger number and B=the smaller number.
Then A>B
A=4B-5 [1]
A+B=50 [2]
Substitute [1] into [2]:
(4B-5)+B=50
5B=55
B=11
A=4(11)-5=44-5=39.
The larger number is 39.
The smaller number is 11.
