What you need to do is convert one of the numbers so they are both to the same power of 10. For example,
1.2 x 10-1 = 12 x 10-2
Then
(1.2 x 10-1) + (6.0 x 10-2) = (12 x 10-2) + (6.0 x 10-2) = (12 + 6.0) x 10-2 = 18 x 10-2 = 1.8 x 10-1
You could also convert 6.0 x 10-2 to 0.6 x 10-1 and work the problem the same way.
