P=number of pennies
N=number of nickels
P+5N = 294
12+N +5N =294
12+6N = 294
6N = 294-12 = 282
N = 282/6 = 47
P=12+N =12+47 =59
47 nickels and 59 pennies = 5(47) + 59 = 235+59 = 294 cents = $2.94
